Freedom Planet is a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force. There’s trouble around every turn, from insects to giant robots to sheer explosive destruction, but you’ll have a variety of special fighting abilities to blast your way through each stage. As Lilac, you can use Dragon powers to whip enemies with your hair, spin like a cyclone, or fly through the air at high speed like a comet. As Carol, you can bust through foes with a flurry of punches and kicks or summon motorcycles that let you ride up walls and ceilings. I’m biased for a lot of the Sonic the Hedgehog games I used to play from their first release to Sonic Rush Adventure(?), so I’ve had plenty of fun with Freedom Planet so far(I’ve probably had more fun playing Freedom Planet than any of the Sonic the Hedgehog games, tbh). Loved the gameplay, story, graphics, characters, and so on The classic influence is most notable in the fast yet platformer-centric design, but the unique character skills and slight bias to combat is what makes it unique. For example, Lilac is the most comparable to the blue hedgehog but instead of spin dashes and bouncing attacks, she has a whirlwind double jump and ricocheting dash that lets her freely propel herself in any cardinal or ordinal direction. It gives her a great sense of speed and the levels are well-designed around it so it’s a similar tension and excitement, but without it all feeling a bit too familiar or cookie-cutter.
